During his 32 years in practice, Dr. Kaufman has
published and lectured across the country and internationally. 
He is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Washington.

Cary Kaufman was trained at UCLA and the University of Washington.  His is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Washington and the Medical Director of the Bellingham Regional Breast Center. 

As a breast surgeon and in practice for over 30 years, his professional life has focused on individual patient care, with special interests in research, teaching and physician education.  He has lectured on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer both nationally and internationally, including 10 years as a lecturer in the teaching courses of Dr. Laszlo Tabar.  He is a member of the National Ultrasound Faculty of the American College of Surgeons and frequently lectures on use of breast ultrasound.

He currently is the Chairman of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, on the Board of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, is a Trustee on the Board of the National Consortium of Breast Centers, is a current member of the Society of Surgical Oncology and is a representative to the Commission on Cancer.  He is Past-President of the National Consortium of Breast Centers and has been chairman of multiple organizational committees.

He is or has been a journal reviewer for the Annals of Surgical Oncology, the American Journal of Clinical Oncology, The Breast Journal, JAMA, and the Journal of Surgical Oncology.  He has published over 50 articles on multiple aspects of breast care, diagnosis and treatment, including pioneering work on cryoablation for breast tumors, measuring the quality of breast care, defining the value of preoperative needle biopsy, use of ultrasound in the operating room, digital specimen mammography, choosing the optimal procedure for axillary surgery and other subjects.

Dr. Kaufman and his wife live in Bellingham, Washington, and enjoy the beautiful Northwest.  Their son is an attorney in San Francisco, their middle daughter is a radiologist in San Francisco, and their youngest daughter is in the corporate fashion industry in San Diego.
